What A Wonderful World

2024

These bigger drawings were created for the exhibition ‘What a Wonderful World’ by Home With Art SG, held at the Visual Arts Centre during Singapore Art Week 2025. I choose to feature the amazing and diverse wildlife of Singapore, from commonly seen animals like sunbirds, to more unusual creatures like sea slugs, to raise awareness and encourage appreciation of our local biodiversity.

A few years ago, a pair of Ornate sunbirds built a nest right at my doorstep, suspended from our Christmas lights wire. It gave me the opportunity to witness the whole process from nest building to both parents tirelessly feeding the chicks, to the final moment when both chicks fledged from the nest. I had an enjoyable time watching their growth and appreciating the wonders of nature and thus sought to capture those moments and memories as a family portrait.

Singapore is home to a rich variety of wildlife despite being an urban city. However, we have lost a significant amount of biodiversity through the years due to deforestation and urbanization. Featured here are a small selection of baby wildlife animals that were spotted in Singapore in the year 2024. Just as how children are the future of the world, I hope that we will continue to protect these previous lives so that Singapore’s biodiversity can grow endlessly in the many years to come, enriching our world.
